The power from the transmission is transferred to the pinion gear, which rotates the ring gear. The ring gear then rotates the differential case, which in turn rotates the cross – shaft on which the pinion gears are mounted. Since the tractor is moving straight, the pinion gears do not rotate about their own axes. Instead, they simply revolve around the cross – shaft, causing the side gears to rotate at the same speed. This equal rotation of the side gears is transmitted to the axle shafts and the wheels, allowing the tractor to move forward smoothly.

How the Differential Works During Turns

The real magic of the differential comes into play when the tractor is making a turn. As mentioned earlier, the outer wheels need to cover a greater distance than the inner wheels during a turn. When the tractor starts to turn, the resistance on the inner wheel increases because it has to travel a shorter distance. This increased resistance causes the inner side gear to slow down.

The pinion gears, which are in contact with both side gears, respond to this change. They start to rotate about their own axes in addition to revolving around the cross – shaft. As the pinion gears rotate, they allow the outer side gear to rotate faster than the inner side gear. This differential rotation of the side gears is transmitted to the axle shafts and the wheels, enabling the outer wheel to cover a greater distance and the inner wheel to cover a shorter distance, thus facilitating a smooth turn.

Different Types of Tractor Differentials

Open Differential

The open differential is the most common type of differential used in tractors. It provides smooth operation during normal driving and turning conditions. This provides maximum traction in difficult terrain, such as deep mud or snow. However, the downside is that the tractor will experience more tire scrubbing during turns when the differential is locked.
